Top Mayoral Candidates graded on the Environment

TEA has evaluated and graded almost 30 mayoral and over 200 council candidates in all wards of the city on their commitment to continue building a green Toronto.

TEA created a survey of 20 'yes' or 'no' questions about the 6 Environmental Priorities identified by TEA and endorsed by organizations and individuals across the City. These priorities identify key action areas for the next mayor and council to work on to build on the last ten years of environmental progress at the City.

 ROB FORD

F

No interest in the environment -  Because Mr. Ford failed to respond to our survey or even tell us why he wouldn't fill it out, he received an F. This is unfortunate because many organizations and individuals from all corners of the city care about the environment. He clearly does not consider the environment an important issue nor does he consider it important to talk to Torontonians about an issue they care about. Torontonians expect better from someone who wants to be their next Mayor.
 JOE PANTALONE

20/20

A+

Strongest on the environment - Mr. Pantalone got an A+ on our report card. His commitment to the environment and the issues surrounding it are clear. If elected mayor, he will continue to build on the past 10 years of environmental success by moving forward with the 2007 Transit City Plan, the Sustainable Energy Strategy and increasing waste diversion. His only fault is not presenting more detailed, innovative ideas about how he will move forward.

F

No interest in the environment - Like Mr. Ford, Mr. Rossi has shown that the environment is not one of his priorities, and so got an F. Despite repeated attempts at contacting Mr. Rossi for his answers, he failed to respond to any of our efforts. He also failed to show up to our mayoral debate, even after committing to it. Mr. Rossi is sending voters the message that he does not care about the environment, and is ignoring the voices of the many Torontonians who do.
GEORGE SMITHERMAN

A+

Shows Clear Commitment - Mr. Smitherman's commitment to the environment is clear and he receives an A+. If elected mayor, he commits to the City’s Sustainable Energy Strategy, creating local, green jobs, reducing toxic pollution and getting green bins into apartment buildings and condos. But he stumbled on two important issues: he refused to rule out burning garbage and he refused to fully implement the City's bike plan. Finally, his transit answers don't match his transit platform.

The Survey

TEA created a survey made up of 20 'yes' or 'no' questions about the the 6 Environmental Priorities identified by TEA and endorsed by organizations and individuals across the City. These priorities identify key action areas for the next mayor and council to work on to build on the last ten years of environmental progress at the City.

Candidates were sent the survey by email, and all non-responsive candidates received additional email and follow-up phone calls. Candidates were told that not responding to the survey would result in a failing grade.

History

TEA has a long tradition of being Toronto Council's environmental watchdog.

During municipal elections, we've surveyed and graded candidates, and hosted mayoral debates.

We also watch City Hall closely and have issued Smog and Environmental Report Cards for the past ten years on councillor voting records on key green decisions at council.
